Learning a language? Speak it like you’re playing a video game | Marianna Pascal | TEDxPenangRoad5/11/2019 A French engineer is cooking the hot dogs, and he turns to this Korean engineer, and he says, "Would you like a hot dog https://brick-knight.com/south-africa-legalizing-online-gambling/?"
And the Korean guy says, "Yes, please!" He says, "Do you want the cheese?" And the Korean guy looks around at the table, he says, "I no see cheese." The French guy says, "The hot dog is contains the cheese." (Laughter) The Korean guy doesn't understand him, right? So the French engineer tries again. "The hot dog is ... making from ... with the cheese." Korean guy still doesn't understand. He tries again, he says, "The hotdog is coming from - No, the cheese is coming from the hot dog." (Laughter) Korean guy cannot understand. Now there's a Japanese engineer who's been listening to this conversation, turns to the Korean engineer and he says, "Ah! Cheese ... integrator!" (Laughter) He understands, okay. (Laughter) Everybody understands. So, this is what English is today. It's just a tool to play around with to get a result, like a computer game. Now, the challenge is that we know in schools all around the world, English is not really being taught like it's a tool to play with. It's still being taught like it's an art to master. And students are judged more on correctness than on clarity. Some of you might remember the old comprehension exam in school. Does everybody remember in school when you'd get a question about a text that you read, you'd have to read through some text, right? And then answer a question to show that you understood the text? And this may have happened to you that you showed you understood the text, but you got a big X because you made a little grammar mistake. Like this student. This student clearly understood paragraph four. But no, not correct! Because he left the letter N off the word "environment." But in the real world, what would matter? In the real world, what would matter is did you understand the email, or did you understand your customer so that you can go ahead and take action? Now, the problem that I see here, over and over, is that people take the attitude they developed about English in school, and they bring it into their adult life and into their work. And if you're in a stressful situation, and you're having a conversation, and you're trying to give a result to someone and say it correctly, your brain multi-tasks, it cannot do two things at once. And what I see is the brain just shutting down. And you may recognize these three symptoms of the brain shutting down. The first one is that your listening goes. Someone is talking to you, and you're so busy thinking about how you're going to respond and express yourself correctly, you don't actually hear what the other person said. And I can see a lot of nodding in the audience. The second thing to go is your speaking. Your mind sort of shuts down, and that vocabulary you do know just disappears, and the words don't come out. The third thing to go is your confidence. The worst thing about this is you may only be [un]confident because you cannot express yourself clearly, but to the person talking to you, they may misunderstand this as a lack of confidence in your ability to do the job, to perform. So if you want to speak English like Faizal with that great confidence, here's the one thing that you can do. When you speak, don't focus on yourself. Focus on the other person and the result you want to achieve. Imagine a next generation of Malaysians, all with that wonderful confidence in communication that Faizal has, at any level of English. Because let's remember that English today is not an art to be mastered, it's just a tool to use to get a result. And that tool belongs to you. Thank you.

Actually got a chance to tour the three most famous cheesesteak joints in Philadelphia. And since all the owners were gracious enough to host us, we decided to return the favor by inviting them our table for a little friendly competition. We'll look at my visit to their restaurants in a bit, but first let's get table-side to steak out the action real money Malaysia. Sorry, I just couldn't resist. - I guess here we stay "winner, winner, cheesesteak dinner." (laughing) - [Chris] As we kickoff day two at SugarHouse, the buy-ins are between five and $20,000. (laughs) It's almost like you (laughs) shouldn't be able to straddle from the button. - [Chris] Tony Luke, Jr will limp in. - [Torelli] Yeah, i was thinking about that, but I-- - [Chris] Olivieri limps in. - [Deeb] You mean you have the same logic. - [Torelli] Cause it's just makes everybody do it and it's like the game kinda is like ruined you know? - [Chris] So all the three cheesessteak kings are in. - [Deeb] It will make some things go quicker. - [Torelli] Yeah, I think it's just, yeah, we should just not do that, either of us, because then it's just like gonna be two. - How would it effect anything? - [Torelli] Yeah, it's like two boring of a game. - I would object anyway. - Yeah, that's why I said you shouldn't be allowed to do it. - But yeah, we'll, we'll just agree not to do it. - Yeah, because it's like too boring of a game. - Just only allow under the gun to straddle if you want. - Yeah, I agree, it's just too boring if me and you straddle on the button every hand. - How much do I have to raise, anything? (laughing) - [Luke] Whatever you want. - It's your world man. - [Olivieri] I don't know about that. (laughing) - When you're the first to bet it is. (laughing) - Oh, you don't have a hand, sorry. All the people who serve sandwiches for a living. - Yeah (laughs). - This should be a juicy pot. - [Chris] Queen on the turn. - You're ruining all the puns that Chris is going to use later. - Yeah, I know no longer-- (laughing) - [Chris] Yeah Schneider, step off my line. - Check. - [Chris] Everyone checks around. River gives Tony Luke, Jr two pair. Luke bets $400. - What the heck, it's somebody else's money anyway. - I'll call you Frank. - Four hundred is the bet. - All right, let's see some cards. - Well, this is a real cheesesteak battle. - Wow. - I got it. - Now, he's got two pair. - [Chris] And this battle of the cheesesteak kings will go to Tony Luke, Jr winning our first hand of the night. - Nice play, Tony. - Thank you. - [Torelli] I like him better when he smiles. (laughing) - People say every time people see me they say Phil you've lost weight. - Yeah, maybe TV adds weight. - Yeah, oh yeah. - It does. - And that's my excuse. - [Luke] TV adds it-- (laughing) A few hundred pounds, TV adds to you. - [Vento] Yeah, and that's why I'm wearing black. (laughing) - It's a compliment in one sense, but then you think about the million people that saw you on TV that think you weigh more. - I said you lost weight, like, that's always a compliment, - Yup. - Unless you're a woman and you say "Well, I was fat before." But that's just always a compliment. I haven't seen you since last summer, so I dunno. - You don't even go out for the summer anymore, do you? - No. For last like three years I was in Macau and then... I just, you know.... - Yeah. - Gave up on tournaments mainly. - Last year I missed three or four weeks of summer and it felt so great. Like, it was such a like... Coming from my grinding days, like, just to be able to leave during the World Series and stay at home. Many thanks to my editor from assignment writing service, who helps me write articles for you.
Exercise balls, also known as stability balls, are great all-round tools for strengthening and toning.. They are especially effective for helping with core stability. The core muscles in the center of your body, which include your abdominal muscles and your lower back muscles, can be effectively strengthened with regular use of an exercise ball. There are a variety of ways to use the multi-purpose exercise ball to work your various back muscles, and this will give you better muscle symmetry and true strength, as you will be working your tendons and ligaments as well, and will not have the stability of a machine to compensate for any weaknesses. Some back muscle exercises you can try with an exercise ball include the following: Upper Back It is best to use hand weights in conjunction with an exercise ball to effectively work the upper the upper back muscles. Any number of exercises can be done with your hand, arm, chest or upper half stabilized on the ball and your feet on the floor. For instance, try lateral raises and rowing movements with your chest stabilized on the ball and your feet on the floor. For individual sides (to improve symmetry and/or to work a weak side for a few more reps), stand with your non-working arm or hand on the ball for stability and tighten your abs, then perform one-armed raises or rows. Lower Back Extension The lower back often gets missed in workout routines, which is unfortunate as it is an important component in your overall health and strength. This simple (not easy, as balancing on the ball is a great stability exercise on its own!) exercise will help strengthen the muscles in your lower back. Lie with your stomach draped over the exercise ball, feet on the floor and hands behind your head. Using your feet for stability (put them against a wall if need be until you are stronger), lift your head and torso so that you are flexing and tightening your lower back muscles. Do not lead with your neck or head, rather focus on the lower back muscles you are working to ensure they are being isolated. Your glutes will be involved in this as well, especially until your lower back muscles grow stronger. 6. Drop That Can Of Soda (Including Diet!)
Sodas have become water in American society. In fact, most Americans drink over 2 full glasses of soda every day. It doesn't sound like much at first, but it starts adding up really quick. It's hard to avoid the temptation of a crispy soda whenever you eat greasy food, but once you can control yourself, you'll be rewarded with a drop in your scale. Drinking less soda will decrease your caloric intake, lower your sugar intake, and increase feelings of satiety. This leads to fewer cavities, better health, and more weight loss. 7. Who Cut The Salt No one likes bland food, but the saltier the food gets, the bigger risk you are putting your body in. Salt makes the body retain more water while drying out certain organs. It can also affect your blood pressure and lead to long-term weight gain. What most people don't know is that over 95% of dieters gain weight in the long term. The key isn't to start eating bland food here and now. The best and easiest way is to get used to it little by little. When you're making soup, put 1/4 teaspoon of salt less than what the recipe calls for. Next time, put in 1/2 teaspoon less. By taking things in little increments, you won't noticed the blandness of the food and eventually, you'll be used to using less salt and will prefer food with less salt. That means you'll be healthier and leaner! 8. Go Light! Ever since it became taboo to eat fatty foods, supermarkets have been supplying the world with the "light" version of everything. We've got light/diet soda, light cream, light salad dressing. The sad truth is that "light" isn't universal for "less fat." You will still gain weight with some light foods, but there are some that truly do make you lighter! The following group is made up of foods that actually have less fat: light sour cream, light cream cheese, light cream, light evaporated milk, light coconut milk, light milk. These products can cut out over 30% of fat, giving you a healthier meal and a lighter body. Though other light foods such as light cakes or light peanut butter may contain less fat than their normal counterparts, it may not even be worth the difference. 9. Turn Up the Heat Cayenne peppers can actually help you lose weight! Cayenne peppers have been used in traditional medicine for centuries. As you may or may not know, this amazing pepper is very spicy and that can be attributed to a powerful component that exists in cayenne peppers called capsaicin. Capsaicin not only brings the heat, but it is also the component mainly attributed to help produce such beneficial health effects. Cayenne peppers has been studied and known to have a long list of health benefits from fighting inflammation to boosting your immunity. I know you have been dying to find out that cayenne peppers have been shown to produce weight loss. A double blind placebo controlled study in Maastricht University in the Netherlands found that capsaicin can help sustained fat oxidation and help with weight maintenance. |
